Drag Out The Vote with Phi Phi O'Hara

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

1 out of 5 members of the LGBTQ community is not registered to vote and this election and Jaremi Carey, creator of Drag Race's Phi Phi O'Hara, ain't having it. As a co-chair of Drag Out the Vote campaign, their initiative is to mobilize drag artists across America to increase voter participation in their communities this November with big name to local city Queens.

In addition to Jaremi’s Phi Phi O’Hara character, he has stayed in the social media spotlight through his photo projects of 365 Days of Drag as well as his Harry Potter inspired Wizardry series, where he recreated looks from both the male and female characters. Jaremi has one heel in the drag world, and one foot in the cosplay scene.

We chatted with him about the campaign, his time on Drag Race, and surviving quarantine with your boo.

I that's amazing introduction I let her whole lay oup there likeyou're all set and you're a little layr. I literally just got. This is mystreaming room, but I literally just got done sreaming, so ye and I love how your hair matches likeor laling. Do you all right we're going to jump rightinto it on Metro source man now sort of? On a serious note, we havetaken a few steps back Um in terms of...

...lbt quality during this crent politicaland social climate. Our youth are going back in the closet, they're dealingwith suicide, UM issues, they're scared to come out scared to be themselves, and I know that you're coming out wasn't exactly the best Um. Can youshare a little bit about your story and Offerang advice to our youth or anyone?Really, that's that's. Coming out. You know I Hav to I mean I grew up inTexas M in a very religious family and very Republican family as well so M. II had a girlfriend, not 'cause. I didn't want Yo. I I'm attracted towomen. Um was at the time and Um, and for me I I my dad beat me up when he found out. Itwas day like all thes stuff, but I do. I do think it's changed a lot for the good and I think, like the youngergeneration, is so um they're, so much smarter and they're, so much more openand free, and I think that's really cool M. I think the most important partwhen coming out is that Um to make sure you have a safeenvironment. To do so. You know what I mean Yeah Um. Now I know that you kind ofyou kind o survive on your own. You KINDA had to make it on your own. Wheredid you draw that strength from Ryou got ta live? You know what I meanlike I was homeless for a while, and I um I used to like so a truth. I used to like couch surfand like find, I would like date guys. You knowwhat I mean o just have a place to teak at night and that's bad reality with alot of lgvgou. You know what I mean n with their family's, taking them out oftheir house and for me it was just like Um I had to live, and so I I have to makeit. Okay, Um, let's tackle little drag race. You have been very vocal about your experience on the show. Do you feeltheorexa little bit,...

...doyou think your experience whasdifferent, because you entere the competition as a performer whosecharacter was pethioera rather than the other queens whose whole lives weretheir characters. No, I think at is just UNSHADI Thissrai. I thinkthere's people that need the show and D it's great, because what they do theydo dragon they do it well and- and that show is great fore showing off theirskills. But I do so much more than just drat and fror me when I got there and Iprobably because I gain going back to being like a homeless and fighter, andeverything like I had to fight for my place on th in this planet for me beingin thes scene, the set up where everyone tells you what to do and sayand who to be just. I was sick of it. You know what I mean, so I was justlike I'm not doing this. I can't put up with this. The first season like AlSeason for was it was fun because I love a Villi who doesn't love a villainon T v like like. I knew what I was doing. It was so fun like creatingthese moments of drama and everything, wastoy producers and Sharon Um. But when all stars two came around, Iwas so sure of who I was not only as an adult but like as an artist that I for someone to tell me like what I wasdoing was not good because it wasn't to their standards of art. I was done. Iwas like I'm not putting up Otin Yeah Um, no, I'm a huge fan of your costplay.Your Harry Potter work was amazing, and then, when I, when I saw yoursocial media today, Lut O see Ruthie up there that looks so unpoint. I you it threehundred and sixty five days of drag. I can barely put on matching socks. Whatis what is your God creat process in creating an implementing a campaign andand your luck, weach one ot a different process, I'mthree hundred and sixty five. I...

...we just finished filming all stars too.It hasn't even aired yet and Elisa, and I got into her argument and it reallylike stuck with me, because she was like we'll see who people believe wh'cause, who has the most followers, and I was like really so. This is thefollowwor thing d you think because, like I didn't have as many follers atthe time that no one's going to believe me and so, which I and so I was like what cand I do weretrue talent, not not not a show back in the up to make me a star, but true ton. What could I do um and just before they even aired alstarseven announced to CASF, and I was like you know A. I have a lookbook of stuffthat I can't do like ontour like the shows ontowards like j Super Fassyouhave. You have minutes to change, and so and my Thir ity five were likefull and elaborate Um, pbody, paints and stuff o. What can I do, and so Iwas like Y H every day I release a new Nede. Look in this book that I dotle inand then I didn't realize, like O, how Coaegos, by like, how can you liveSoething, I added? U And I'm Pakful for like E, I would like to Bento shop alot like episters t, buyshit and then Biaca Delrio when she she, I happenedto gin her when she was moving. I live in New York so when she was moving fromNew York to l a she was clearing out, like all her drags, so she gave me likebags and bags and bags of Shit that I used for Um, thr, ND, six re days ofdrag and then Harry Potter. I was like Allr, I'm not going to do another photoseries of three hundred and sixty five, but what n like thre ine Poto? Whatphoto series could I do and elevate it from the last time? I did it and I so Idid the Harry Potter Series Ith like insane m prosthetics and postuming andMakein transformations, and I that time I switched it up witgender and I didwhether it was a male or female presenting or Gremalin Monster. I did that and the now withthis one m t e Troub, leazing woman. It's not just me it's women from aroundthe world. Now I did like mebe four or five tunsimutions. I believe me beforeand Um, but this Tim Wer's shining late on Um women around the world.

It's it's remarkable and it reallyreally shows off so much of of your creative aspect, an your wholepersonality. You have so many different creative atraits and I want to talkabout, drag out to vote inspiring the lbt community t get out and votesurprising fact. One out of five members of our community are notregistered to vote what? What yen e Reaction Tin Ras? No,NO WH! Why do you think that is? I think that like M, especially withYouth, I think there's just a lot more issues that Um that theyre focused onat the moment. Then then voting again. It goes back to me like being homelesst you know finding cals to sleep on. I think like especially ith you they're, trying tofigure out who they are navigating through that and and which is important, just trying to survive rather than voting for them. But now is essential. You need to vote to survive and this election is is super important, especially for our rights, because they're slowly being stripped away- andI remember Um when donal thump was elected president.I remember just the fear of not knowing what he um his administration would do and I wasengaged at the time an ot o fear, my husband D. I just went straight to thecourthouse to get married. We didn't have O dream wedding that we wanted. Wejust went to the corhouse just so, if anything happened, maybe we'd begrandfathered. An you know said some program, which is sad, L Ke. That's sadto think I shouldn't have to think like that. So I just think that Um I'd liketo think Um th the administration for opening O r Rice a lot of politics andwanting US pushing us to a caremoe, which I will say that for sure. Well, I think if there is anygood it's that we have been challenged as a community and other minoritygroups socially and politically, so we we're now having to fight, and thisyounger generation is going to have more of a respect of how our our gayrights started in the first place, W nd, I think it's so cool because they, like I said they're, so free and openand brave and like they know the power...

...that they have and it's so cool to seean Il old thing. This, like really Fel, I'm so proud of, likeexpeciall, my younger fans and following t that I see going out theremarching in the streets or raising money or being a dragonbassador now forthis pnew program, which I otte, Bak so cool. Now, how can we, as your fans, support, drag out the vote? Well, I'm simple: Well, civil fall. Youguys can follow them on ver, social, MEDA. That's that's super easy, but alot of people think like. Oh, I don't have any money. I can't give or donateand a lot of people, especially with this pandemic. That is a very com thing.A lot of us lost our jobs and so um. You never know the power of a retweedor sharing information and the cool thing that Jackie Huba, the creator ofdrag out the vote and ihave talked about is that it is so important tesocial media. It's so easy to retreat something and not do your research onit and with drag out the vote. They are putting out accurate, importantinformation that needs to be shared and it costs zero n and everybody's ontheir phone. Everybody is, is JEP. SES constantly takes zero effort to reteatsomething and share or something you never know, who's going to say it inthe power of as weet. So all right. I want you to give me alittle relationship advice because you have been in a relationship for quite anumber of years n. As you as you mentioned, you were marry wsorry singleboy, angerrelationship advice. Do you have? I can't even get a date, you know so I was joking about it. 'cause, I'malways on torprior to the pandemacand. My husband really never saw each otherand it was like in passing, and so it gave us like that chance to miss eachother. You know and, and I come home and then now it's every day. No, but it's it's been great and weargue that's part of it. I think a lot of people think that Um...

...especially an I had this intell, youargue and people are like. Oh, it's not going to wark or done. No argumentshappened, a D and, and I yeah th y. They need to happen to can learn andgrow from that and- and I think it's just- you have to be secure. N in yourrelationship. Like my husband and I are supersecure, we we know who we are. Weknow we're coming home to each other, and maybe that comes of age andeverything, but it sounds so cheesy and it's so cliche. It really truly is. Butwhen it happens and you meet that person, you surely will know and itlike. I met him in the club out of all a hopeless place AS Roma says, and we um it was like instant like. I waslike, like I'm, going, to marry him and it's sofunny 'cause I used to laugh at like you know you watch these couples andthey're like I just looked across the room and fall and knew- and I was likeokay, but it's so true it and it will happen so how gare you, Sir r, so lucky when it's funny becausebeing home stuck with somebody you' like I didn't realize he was a mouthbreather ohokay. I won't say this so there's been, my husband does snorelike Oh, my God and 'cause. I havet really been home toexperience so gow sometimes like. If I do not go tobed before he falls asleep, I will go like lat in like the living room andfall see because it is so loud. I cannot he's Goin t get Ma oering this, but it's it'smore loud sookay. Let's play alittle rapid fire before we go. Are you reading? That's R, okay, biggestonstage mishap? Oh, I fell on m sage, Ed Mickey's andHollywood and impres holed and put it on his website. Okay, NO HITMISS! Okay,a celebrity would want to give a costplay makeover too o m Angel Asuli O that would befebulous m. What is a challenge that you would add to dragrace? I have saidthis for a bazilion years that they...

...drag Ray squeens go on the road so muchand they have to go from place oplace to place sometimes straight from theairport, to the GIG, and I think, O be so cool for their first time meetingeach other the moment that they get off that plane that they have to get andand make up in the car and go to set and that's how they're introduce. Oh,that's a really good channels, like almost like amazing race, an t aterlydoes challenge yo like car drag. Oh, I love that. Okay, strangest fan request or comment. Oh Mybegod I get to daily. I will tink t one time though I wuldntsay it was it Waone, Ohior Indiana, one of those and Um they, the promoter gaveout where I was staying and my hotel one numberyeahand. They went to my roomand they were on like five dollar bills, which Ou der you. It should be like atwenty hunre Som Im, more get git o honey ther were like liery writing onmessages like jeeze come out and see me, and then they slit eneer the door and IITAS NWE had to call security and then switche my rooms, but yeah. That wasreally weird. Oh my God, I ce like send picks Sliderandera, not just te Cor. Ai rewhat's, thestrangest thing or the shady thing you've seen backstage at a drag, showthat that you can happen. II've never seen anything shady to behones, Yo mean we see fights and cat fights, but as far as like breaking upglass and sticking it up and Sh, I've never seen like anything shape. 'causeyou know at is grow up in Texas, like binches. If they ave G, hey, they K gotsomething to say: Abo Sate Retin in there so Y, we Hadl six O Eg Yeh doreally with it anything crazy. No all right, I tell all of our audiencewhere o you want them to find and follow you. So I'm I'm on all of mysocial medias as I'm under fifiohera still until they. I can't change it,because I'm a Veri fiht account, and so I yeh so insogramit is I'm Af Dara still, but on my twinter Um, it's just germy.
